Wilmer Flores hits home run No. 20, but Padres outslug SF Giants SAN DIEGO — Wilmer Flores’ understated superstar season continued Friday night. But, like most the rest of it, the Flo Show lacked a supporting act.Flores slugged his 20th home run of the season with flourish, tanking the fifth pitch of the game to the upper deck of the Western Metal Supply Co. building in left field, but the rest of the Giants’ lineup wilted against Michael Wacha in a 7-3 loss to the Padres (63-73), squaring the weekend series at a game apiece.Flores gave the Giants (70-65) an early lead with his first-inning home run, but within five pitches out of Tristan Beck’s right hand, he had given it right back.Looking to follow up strong showing Sunday against the Braves, Beck’s tryout for a full-time rotation spot did not go well. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Juan Soto went back-to-back, and the Giants were in a 6-1 hole by the time manager Gabe Kapler came to get him with two outs in the third inning. The Giants’ previous five starters combined to ...

(AP) — Noah Kim threw for 279 yards and two touchdowns, helping Michigan State pull away to beat Central Michigan 31-7 on Friday night. The Spartans (1-0) started slow in Kim’s first start due to errant throws and dropped passes before taking control with accurate passes, clutch catches and stingy defense.“I just think it was jitters,” Michigan State coach Mel Tucker said.Nathan Carter had a 2-yard, go-ahead touchdown run with 48 seconds left in the first half and the Connecticut transfer finished with 113 yards on 18 carries. The Chippewas (0-1) led 7-3 late in the first half after Bert Emanuel Jr. threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Chris Parker, but they gave up an 84-yard touchdown drive on the ensuing possession in less than a minute and couldn’t recover.“We gave ourselves an opportunity,” Central Michigan coach Jim McElwain said. “They took advantage obviously of that turnover and then there in the second half we never got it back.”Kim, who began 2 of 7 ...

Maui fire missing list falls slightly to 385. Governor had indicated it would be below 100 By AUDREY McAVOY and JENNIFER SINCO KELLEHER (Associated Press)HONOLULU (AP) — The number of people on the official list of those missing from the Maui wildfire stood at 385 on Friday, nearly unchanged from a week earlier. In a news release, the Maui Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation said 245 people on the list of 388 made public the previous week were located and removed from the list. However, a nearly equal number of new names were added. The updated total was a startling departure from what had been expected — a day earlier Gov. Josh Green said he expected the number would fall below 100.“We think the number has dropped down into the double digits, so thank God,” Green said in a video posted to his account on X, formerly known as Twitter.Authorities have said at least 115 people died in the fire, which tore through Lahaina in a matter of hours on Aug. 8 — the deadliest wildfire in the U.S. in more than a century. Rally held in Coronado over Tijuana River sewage crisis CORONADO, Calif. -- Dozens of protesters gathered to pressure state and federal officials to expedite work on a system to capture the toxic waste flowing from Tijuana into the Pacific Ocean. In just August, Imperial Beach officials say billions of gallons of toxic sewage waste and trash flowed through the Tijuana River Valley and contaminated Imperial Beach beaches and reaching Coronado as well. The generational problem stems from a failed Mexican wastewater system. “It’s been impacting humanity for decades, but now it’s time to step up as a united front and to tell the governor that he's got to address this,” protest organizer Marely Ramirez said. Now, federal officials have allocated $350 million to fix and retrofit a water filtration plant, but the process is slow going and Paloma Aguirre, the mayor of Imperial Beach, has lost all patience, demanding California Gov. Gavin Newsom and President Biden declare a state of emergency. Red tide, bioluminescent waves roll into parts of ...

No matter how big a deficit he faces. No matter how poorly he might be playing. And so it made sense that Djokovic would manage to come all the way back from a two-set deficit to beat Laslo Djere 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 in the third round of the U.S. Open, avoiding what would have been his earliest exit there since 2006.“Trust me,” Djokovic said, “it was nerve-racking all the way until the last shot.”The match began under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday night and did not wrap up until more than 3 1/2 hours later, concluding just after 1:30 a.m.It was Djokovic’s eighth career victory after dropping the opening two sets of a match. He also improved to 38-11 in five-setters over his career. One he seized control, he held on tight and never let Djere recover. (AP) — An assistant high school football coach in Washington state who lost his job during a controversy over his public post-game prayers was back on the field Friday after the U.S. Supreme Court held his practice was protected by the Constitution.Joe Kennedy strode alone to midfield, knelt and prayed for about 10 seconds after his Bremerton High School football team beat visiting Mount Douglas Secondary School 27-12 Friday night.Kennedy was not joined by any athletes or others on the nearly empty field. There was scattered applause from the modest crowd at Memorial Stadium.Police and private security guards were on hand but there didn’t appear to be any problems or interruptions during or after the event.Kennedy had fought to be rehired for seven years but seemed more anxious than triumphant about his return. “Knowing that everybody’s expecting me to go do this kind of gives me a lot of angst in my stomach,” Kennedy said before the game. “People are going to...
