New atmospheric river storm barrels toward California

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 06:29:09 GMT

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California braced Thursday for the arrival of another atmospheric river that forecasters warned will bring heavy rain, strong winds, thunderstorms and the threat of flooding to a state still digging out from earlier storms. The flood threat will come from the combination of rain and melting of parts of the huge snowpack built in California's mountains by nine atmospheric rivers early in the winter and later storms fueled by a blast of arctic air.The new atmospheric river is a type known as a “Pineapple Express” because it is a deep tap of warm subtropical moisture stretching over the Pacific to Hawaii. Its greatest impacts were expected in northern and central California. The snowpack at high elevations is so massive it should be able absorb the rain, forecasters said. But elevations below 4,000 feet (1,219 meters) will see melting and runoff. The National Weather Service characterized the flood threat as “moderate.”At high elevations the storm was predicted ...

Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome: What Is CHS and Can It Kill You?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 06:29:09 GMT

These days, whenever we hear the word “cannabis,” the majority of what we associate it with is its wonderful cures. While most of the benefits of marijuana may be true, one can still experience side effects — BUT, that’s the case with almost everything a human body takes in. One side effect of weed, however, may be far from possibly killing a person, but when someone goes through this syndrome, it isn’t necessarily a pleasant experience — and that ailment is CHS. Gallerist, curator, consultant, and pillar of progressive platforming Annie Wharton started Ladies’ Room — the Los Angeles-based contemporary art gallery where it’s always Women’s History Month — five years ago, but her vision has never been timelier.“Working in the visual arts for more than 20 years, I have seen firsthand how women and nonbinary artists are not being exhibited, collected, researched or written about like their male counterparts,” Wharton tells the L.A. Weekly. “I have conducted over 4,000 studio visits with artists in Los Angeles, a city rich with artistic talent, yet lacking in opportunities for women and nonbinary artists.” In December 2018, Wharton opened Ladies’ Room to provide a platform to help counter this disparity.Becca Van K: Drexcyen Star Chamber (Drexciya), 2014, Embroidery floss, canvas mesh, pine, and hardware 18.5 x 18.5 x 2 in (in WORK at LADIES’ ROOM)Ladies’ Room operates out of a small space in downtown’s historic Bendix Building — a hub of ...

The Sunnyvale blogger and author of “The Zero-Waste Chef” (Avery, $25) cookbook calls these peanut butter and cocoa powder-laced bars “too good.”Created by her daughter, Charlotte, they feature oats, flaxseed meal, honey and cranberries for a perfect not-too-sweet treat or hiking snack. According to Menlo Park food blogger and chef Andrea Potischman, the homemade power bite craze started in 2017, the same year she launched Simmer + Sauce. It was a direct response to the overpriced, sugar-loaded commercial protein bars often passed off as healthy. These two-bite, coconut-laced balls are healthy, however. In addition to her granola bar-like Apricot Almond Breakfast Bars, Potischman likes to whip these up for a quick breakfast or last-minute hike. If you don’t keep a dairy-free diet, you can use regular chocolate chips.No-Bake Cowboy Power BitesMakes 15 power bitesINGREDIENTS¾ cup rolled oats½ cup shredded coconut (sweetened or unsweetened)1/3 cup dairy-free Enjoy Life chocolate chips (or regular chocolate chips)1/3 cup roasted pecans, finely chopped1 tablespoon dark muscovado sugar, like India Tree½ cup almond flour1/3 cup, plus 1 tablespoon creamy almond butter2 tablespoons local honey1 teaspoon vanilla extract2 tablespoons chia seedsDash of cinnamonRelated Ar...
