Golf: In hopes of nabbing PGA Tour card, North Oaks’ Frankie Capan III has strong opening round at Q-School

Frankie Capan III had about the worst start imaginable Thursday to open the final stage of PGA Tour Q-School.He hit his opening drive into a hazard. That led to a double bogey on No. 10 at the Dye’s Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass in Florida. That’s not an ideal start in this event.Capan, who already has, at minimum, his Korn Ferry Tour card for 2024 locked up thanks to a strong rookie season on that tour,- has to finish in the top five with ties in this week’s 165-player field to earn his PGA Tour card. So spotting everyone else two strokes on the first hole immediately makes a difficult task all the more challenging. But, as Capan is wont to do, he recovered from the mistake and put together a solid round. The North Oaks native went 3-under par over his final 17 holes, carding four birdies and one bogey, to finish the day at 1-under par. That leaves him in a tie for 20th and three strokes back of fifth place with three rounds to play in the no-cut tournament.Capan proved ...Moment of truth for Billy’s on Grand liquor license on Wednesday

For months, Wesley Spearman has floated a proposal to rebrand Billy’s on Grand — a longstanding restaurant and bar that has recently drawn negative attention after frequent police calls — as the Gather Eatery and Bar, which he calls an out-with-the-old approach to a better relationship with the community around St. Paul’s Grand Avenue.A key turning point could happen next Wednesday, when the St. Paul City Council is scheduled to determine whether to issue the Gather Eatery and Bar its own liquor and entertainment licenses.Spearman’s efforts to revamp Billy’s have faced roadblocks. The liquor and entertainment licenses that his business, the DWD Group, currently use to serve alcohol are effectively borrowed from the official owner, Randall Johnson and the RJMP Group, who purchased the 380-seat restaurant at 857 Grand Ave. from building owner Bill Wengler and the Wengler family shortly before the pandemic. The Wengler family had operated Billy’...Potential avian flu outbreak reported at Moreau Lake State Park

Boyle coached one of the best hoops teams in Bears history. So while this year’s version of the UNC Bears is a team in transition after losing a pair of premier scorers, Boyle has been quick to caution his Colorado men’s basketball team about complacency.Coming off their biggest win of the season’s early stages, the Buffaloes are hitting a slower competition window two weeks ahead of the start of Pac-12 Conference play with renewed confidence and an understanding that any off night can have long-lasting ramifications.Friday night’s date is part of a two games-in-18 days stretch for the Buffs, who nearly rejoined the Associated Press Top 25 this week but once again are likely to play without standout freshman Cody Williams.“They’ve recruited some good players. I like their personnel,” said Boyle, who coached at UNC for four seasons and led the Bears to a 25-win season in 2009-10 prior to his arrival at CU. “You...Colorado could capture wolves within days — unless a judge delays the state’s reintroduction efforts
