Opinion: Delta mega-tunnel is not the answer to state’s water challenges

Climate change is rapidly affecting California’s environment. From drought to catastrophic floods and landslides occurring from unprecedented atmospheric rivers, to sea-level rise and reduced snowpack, there are many water challenges facing the state. The solution to these problems is not a $16 billion mega-tunnel paid for by ratepayers that won’t be completed until 2040 at the earliest. We need solutions now — solutions that won’t cause further damage to already overburdened ecosystems and communities. The Department of Water Resources’ claim that the Delta tunnel could have moved an additional 228,000 acre-feet of water into San Luis Reservoir during the month of January if it had been operational this year is misleading. The Delta tunnel would not have added any additional supply or contributed to long-term water resilience because there isn’t enough storage space to hold the “additional” water south of the Delta for the next dry year.Given the hydrological forecasting...More than 300,000 Md. families say their kids did not eat enough due to high grocery costs

Forward Selma Bacha, who sprained an ankle in a warm-up game versus Australia on July 14, is also sidelined.“Now she’s running,” Renard said of Bacha. “But we won’t take any risks.”Renard was confident Bacha would be available for France’s match against Brazil on July 29, in Brisbane. BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — England edged Haiti 1-0 on a retaken penalty from Georgia Stanway in a difficult Women’s World Cup opener Saturday for the European champions. England dominated possession in the first half but had to wait until the 29th minute for Stanway to convert from the spot. She was awarded a second shot after her first attempt was well saved by Kerly Theus diving full stretch to her right. The Group D game between the No. 4 and the 53rd-ranked teams was tense from start to finish with Haiti forward Melchie Dumornay regularly troubling the England defense. Theus made a succession of saves to shut down England’s chances of increasing the margin. England goalkeeper Mary Earps made a crucial reflex save in the 81st minute to prevent an equalizer from Haiti’s substitute forward Roseline Éloissaint. Both teams are back in action Friday, with England moving to Sydney to play Denmark and Haiti meeting China in Adelaide, South Australia state. ___More AP coverage of th...England 1, Haiti 0
